Quick Troop - Twice the Man (Shepherd)
Composed by LSgt Ian Shepherd of the Grenadier Guards Band. The name of this march, selected by the Commanding Officer, Lt Col Piers Ashfield DSO, was inspired by the Regimental recruiting poster entitled “You’re Twice the Man in The Grenadier Guards” first used in the 1980s and revised in 2018 which reflects the dual role/purpose of this famous regiment.
The composer of Twice the Man is Lance Sergeant Ian (Shep) Shepherd of The Band of Her Majesty’s Grenadier Guards. He is the principal tuba player, a position he has held for the past nine years. During his time as a member of this world-famous band, Ian has taken part in many high-profile State Ceremonial events.
In his capacity as Staff Arranger/composer for the Band of the Grenadier Guards, he has composed the 2019 Quick Troop March, entitled “Twice The Man”, so called to reflect the dual operational/ceremonial duties of the Grenadier Guards Regiment. This is the first time in the history of the Birthday Parade that the Quick Troop March has been composed by a serving rank and file Musician. The Quick Troop is unofficially regarded as the Massed Bands’ birthday gift to the Monarch.
Ian has, notably, also written fanfares to announce the arrival of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Important events such as the Royal Victorian Order service at Windsor Castle and other major services at London’s Westminster Abbey.
More recently, Ian has become principal tuba of the newly formed ensemble of excellence - The Guards Brass dectet which performs all over the United Kingdom, promoting British Army Music and has undertaken several BBC Radio 3 broadcasts as part of their ‘In Tune’ series of programmes.
The Band of The Grenadier Guards plays with kind permission of the British Army.
